Do You Need Psychotherapy? Many times in our lives our experiences can challenge the ability to enjoy life to its fullest. These experiences can be traumatic and may result in heightened levels of anxiety, depression, compulsivity and/or addictive tendencies. When we are struggling with any of these challenges it is difficult to engage in life in an optimal way. Ask yourself whether your anxiety level feels appropriate to your life situation or is there something else going on. Anxiety can often be about historical issues that have not yet been worked out and are triggered by situations without your awareness of its true source. This can be bewildering and disturbing. Depression can also have its roots in our history. If there have been experiences that have not yet been fully processed you can be left with a deep level of depression that can leave you struggling to accomplish the daily activities of life. Lastly, difficult life experiences can also leave you vulnerable to addictive and compulsive ways of trying to cope. The roots of addiction and compulsion lie in an attempt to get needs met and regulate your emotional world in a self-sufficient manner. These attempts are often initially successful but eventually back fire causing sabotage and destruction in one’s life. Having the opportunity to identify and process such life experiences can help you on to the road of recovery from destructive behavior. Psychotherapy can provide you with this opportunity. Psychotherapy assists in improving the quality of one’s life, specifically in the areas of love, work and play. This improvement is created through the process of facilitated self-examination which allows one to connect to their true desires, wants and needs. This examination helps to identify outdated ways of relating that may have more to do with the past than the current life situation. The tyranny of history is removed and the possibility of loving, working and playing is restored. |
